The best wallpaper sizes for Android phones and tablets

Screen resolutions for popular Samsung, Pixel and OnePlus phones and Android tablets, the shapes to aim for, and how to find your own phone’s size.

Android phones come in more sizes than any other kind of screen, and a list of every model would be out of date within a month. The useful thing is to know the two shapes most phones share, the resolutions they come in, and how to find your exact numbers in ten seconds.

The short answer

Most Android phones made since 2019 have screens between 9:19.5 and 9:20, and between 1080 and 1440 pixels wide. A wallpaper of 1440 × 3120 covers almost all of them, which is why Athiwalls phone wallpapers use that size. On a 1080-pixel-wide screen it is scaled down by a quarter, which keeps it crisp.

Samsung Galaxy S25+, S24+1440 × 31209:19.5
Samsung Galaxy S25, S241080 × 23409:19.5
Samsung Galaxy A56, A551080 × 23409:19.5
Google Pixel 10 Pro XL, 9 Pro XL1344 × 29929:20
Google Pixel 10 Pro, 9 Pro1280 × 28569:20
Google Pixel 10, 91080 × 24249:20
OnePlus 13, 121440 × 31689:20
OnePlus 13R1264 × 27809:20

Two things to know about Samsung phones. First, the Plus and Ultra models usually ship running at FHD+, a lower resolution, to save battery. You can switch to the full resolution in Settings, Display, Screen resolution. Second, on any phone, the picture you see is shaped by the screen’s corners and camera cut-out, so leave a little breathing room around anything important near the edges.

Ignore the inches

Screen size in inches tells you how big a phone feels in your hand, not how many pixels it has. A 6.3-inch Pixel 10 Pro has more pixels across than a 6.7-inch Galaxy A56, because it packs them more tightly. What matters for a wallpaper is the resolution, so compare pixels, never inches.

The same goes for pixel density, the ppi or dpi figure on spec sheets. A sharper screen doesn’t need a different kind of wallpaper, only a large enough one. If the picture has at least as many pixels as the screen, it will look crisp at any density.

Tablets

TabletResolution
Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra, S9 Ultra2960 × 1848
Samsung Galaxy Tab S10+, S9+2800 × 1752
Samsung Galaxy Tab S92560 × 1600
Google Pixel Tablet2560 × 1600

Tablets are close to 16:10, and they turn. Android crops your wallpaper once for landscape and again for portrait, so a tall phone wallpaper loses most of itself as soon as you hold the tablet sideways.

A desktop wallpaper is a better start. At 3840 × 2160, an Athiwalls desktop file fills a landscape tablet with room to spare. Turned to portrait, the tablet shows a central slice of it, enlarged a little. Pictures with their subject near the middle survive the turn best.

Foldables

A foldable has two screens with different shapes. The cover screen is tall and narrow like a regular phone, while the inner screen is close to square. Set each separately: a phone wallpaper on the cover screen, and a desktop or square picture inside. Samsung’s Wallpaper and style settings let you choose a wallpaper for each screen.

How to find your phone’s resolution

The fastest way works on every phone: take a screenshot, open it in your gallery, and look at its details. On most gallery apps you swipe up or tap the info button. A screenshot is always exactly the size of your screen, so its dimensions are your screen’s dimensions.

Then divide the height by the width. If the answer is around 2.2, your screen is 9:20. Around 2.17 is 9:19.5, and around 1.78 is the older 9:16. Pick wallpapers whose shape is close to yours and at least as large.

Why bigger is fine but smaller isn’t

When a wallpaper is larger than your screen, Android combines several pixels into each one it shows, and the result stays sharp. When it is smaller, Android has to invent pixels to fill the gaps, and the result goes soft. A wallpaper 10 to 30 percent larger than your screen is the sweet spot: sharp now, with room for zooming and for your next phone.

Some launchers scroll the wallpaper sideways across your home screens and ask for a picture twice as wide as the screen. If yours does, turn wallpaper scrolling off in the launcher’s settings rather than hunting for extra-wide pictures. For the steps to set one, see how to set a wallpaper on Android.

Questions

What is the best wallpaper size for an Android phone?
1440 × 3120 covers nearly every phone. It is at least as wide as any QHD+ screen, and its 9:19.5 shape sits between the 9:19.5 and 9:20 screens most phones use, so very little is cropped.
Why does my Samsung’s screenshot measure 1080 × 2340 when the screen should be sharper?
Plus and Ultra models usually ship running at FHD+ to save battery. Open Settings, then Display, then Screen resolution, and choose WQHD+ to use the full resolution.
Is there one wallpaper size that suits a phone and a tablet?
Not really. Phones are tall and narrow, while tablets are close to 16:10 and rotate. Use a phone wallpaper on your phone and a desktop wallpaper on your tablet.
