Why wallpapers look blurry, and how to fix it
The usual reasons a wallpaper looks soft on a phone or computer, from chat apps to cloud storage to a hidden zoom, and how to fix each one.
A blurry wallpaper almost always has a simple cause. Either the picture has fewer pixels than your screen, or something softened it on the way from the download to your lock screen. Work down this list and you’ll find it within a few minutes.
The file is smaller than your screen
Each pixel in the picture should cover one pixel on the screen, or less. When a 1080 × 1920 picture is stretched over a 1290 × 2796 iPhone screen, each of its pixels is spread about one and a half times wider and taller. Your phone fills the gaps by blending neighbouring colours, and blending is blur.
How to check: open the picture in your gallery and look at its details; on most phones you swipe up or tap the info button. Compare the dimensions with your screen’s. Our guides to iPhone sizes and Android sizes list the common ones.
The fix: get a larger version. On Athiwalls, the Download button always gives the full file: 1440 × 3120 for phone wallpapers and 3840 × 2160 for desktop ones, larger than the screens they’re made for.
You saved a preview, not the file
Wallpaper sites, Pinterest and Instagram show smaller previews so pages load quickly. Touching and holding a preview to save it, or taking a screenshot of it, gets you that small copy, not the real thing. A screenshot also includes whatever else was on screen, so you crop it, then enlarge it, and it softens again.
On Athiwalls, the preview inside the phone frame is 820 pixels wide; the download is 1440. Always use the button.
A chat app compressed it
WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger and most other chat apps shrink and recompress photos to save data. A wallpaper sent between phones as a photo arrives smaller and blotchier than it left, with banding in smooth skies and gradients.
The fix: send it as a file. In WhatsApp, attach it as a Document. In Telegram, choose to send it as a file or without compression. AirDrop on Apple devices and Quick Share on Android send the original untouched.
The full version hasn’t arrived from the cloud
If you use iCloud Photos with Optimize iPhone Storage, your iPhone keeps small versions of older pictures and fetches the full ones when you open them. Google Photos can show a lighter preview while the original loads too. Set a wallpaper from that small version and you get a small wallpaper.
The fix: open the picture and wait until it has finished loading, with no progress indicator left in the corner, before setting it. For a picture you’ve just downloaded, this is rarely a problem.
You zoomed in while positioning it
Pinching to zoom in while you frame the wallpaper enlarges it, and an enlarged picture loses sharpness. Motion effects add more: Perspective Zoom on iPhone and wallpaper scrolling on some Android launchers both enlarge the picture so it can move.
The fix: frame it less tightly, turn those effects off, or choose a wallpaper whose subject already sits where you want it. Phone wallpapers composed for a screen, with the subject placed below the clock, rarely need zooming at all.
It’s meant to be blurred
On iPhone, the home screen has a Blur option. Some people turn it on by accident and then wonder why their sharp wallpaper looks frosted. Customise the home screen and tap Blur to switch it off. Some Android themes also dim or soften the wallpaper behind open folders and the app drawer; that’s normal, and it clears when you close them.
The picture was soft to begin with
Some pictures are blurry at any size: heavily compressed JPEGs with blocky skies, photos taken in low light, or images that were upscaled before you found them. Zoom in on the original. If it’s soft at full size, no setting will sharpen it, and it’s time to find another.
Athiwalls wallpapers are saved as high-quality WebP, a modern format every current phone and browser opens, at sizes larger than the screens they’re made for. If you’ve worked down this list and one of ours still looks soft on your screen, tell us your phone’s model and we’ll look into it.
Questions
- Why does my wallpaper look sharp in Photos but blurry on the home screen?
- Either the home screen blur is switched on, or a motion effect is enlarging the picture. On iPhone, check the Blur option when you customise the home screen, and turn off Perspective Zoom. On Android, check your launcher’s wallpaper scrolling.
- Does sending a wallpaper over WhatsApp reduce its quality?
- Yes, when it is sent as a photo. WhatsApp shrinks and recompresses photos to save data. Send it as a document instead and the file arrives exactly as it left.
- Can an upscaling app fix a blurry wallpaper?
- It can sharpen edges and hide some softness, but it is guessing at detail that isn’t there, and small textures can come out strange. If a larger version of the wallpaper exists, start from that instead.
